A Gold Star for British Columbia!

CBC News reported today that British Columbia will become the first Canadian province to restrict trans fat in foods prepared and served at restaurants (...there have been regional initiatives, but this marks the first at the provincial level). "The new regulation restricts the amount of trans fat content in oils and spreadable margarine to two per cent of the total fat content, and five per cent for all other food". Although this marks a giant step forward, it is still only in operation at a provincial level. "...the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association said federal regulations are needed for an effective battle against trans fats". The article also points out a flaw within the new regulation: it only applies at the restaurant level. Because it doesn't apply to the suppliers of restaurants, they could start charging more for trans-fat free alternatives than the others, a major concern to restaurateurs already dealing with a struggling economy.

"The real solution here would have been a comprehensive thing that that deals with the entire food industry, not just food service"

This photo is from a popular website This is why you're fat!, a website where people post photos of 'deliciously gross food'. The above photo is entitled 'Heart Attack Sandwich' and is described as: Chicken fried steak, chicken-fried bacon, a country sausage, a fried egg, a fried green tomato topped with cheddar cheese and sandwiched between buns toasted in bacon fat, all served with a gravy dipping sauce...ick!
